Dnsys X1 Exoskeleton Review: A Great Idea In Need of Finesse

WIRED

From the Matrix via Alien to Starship Troopers and Iron Man, exoskeletons have littered sci-fi (and adorable dog-based animations) with the promise of superhuman power for all. While medical, industrial, and military exoskeletons are advancing rapidly, nobody has managed to bring this branch of wearable tech to the masses. General Electric spent most the 1960s trying with the Hardiman exoskeleton, Samsung is still threatening to launch its GEMS (Gait Enhancing & Motivating System), and there has been a litany of failed Kickstarter projects--yet we're still waiting. Still, over the past eight months we've been made aware of three new hip-mounted, walk-assisting exoskeletons. Hypershell has three models available to preorder, and Enhanced Robotic's EX-07 promises you a new PB … soon.

Conversation Chronicles: Towards Diverse Temporal and Relational Dynamics in Multi-Session Conversations

Jang, Jihyoung, Boo, Minseong, Kim, Hyounghun

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In the field of natural language processing, open-domain chatbots have emerged as an important research topic. However, a major limitation of existing open-domain chatbot research is its singular focus on short single-session dialogue, neglecting the potential need for understanding contextual information in multiple consecutive sessions that precede an ongoing dialogue. Among the elements that compose the context in multi-session conversation settings, the time intervals between sessions and the relationships between speakers would be particularly important. Despite their importance, current research efforts have not sufficiently addressed these dialogical components. In this paper, we introduce a new 1M multi-session dialogue dataset, called Conversation Chronicles, for implementing a long-term conversation setup in which time intervals and fine-grained speaker relationships are incorporated. Following recent works, we exploit a large language model to produce the data. The extensive human evaluation shows that dialogue episodes in Conversation Chronicles reflect those properties while maintaining coherent and consistent interactions across all the sessions. We also propose a dialogue model, called ReBot, which consists of chronological summarization and dialogue generation modules using only around 630M parameters. When trained on Conversation Chronicles, ReBot demonstrates long-term context understanding with a high human engagement score.

Artificial intelligence (AI) to Pick Good Investments Why That Might Not Be Such A Great Idea

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is finding its way into every aspect of life. AIs are especially useful in making predictions, and as long as they are fed the correct data, AIs can predict anything. Therefore, it is not surprising that investment companies are looking toward AI for informed decision-making, especially in new areas like web 3.0 & crypto. A lot of data can be gathered from the internet to train an AI to make the right investment decisions. Platforms like LinkedIn, Crunchbase, and third-party data marketplaces can be used to drive AI-based financial research. For example, such data can be used to predict a startup's potential to attract investments.

Elephants Could Become Much Safer with New Artificial Intelligence Tracking

#artificialintelligence

A new artificial intelligence tool could be the key to saving lives and reducing conflict between people and the decreasing populations of endangered Asian and African elephants. African elephant populations have dropped from 12 million to 400,000 in the past century, according to the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF). There are also now fewer than 50,000 Asian elephants left in existence, according to WWF estimates. The gentle mammals face an onslaught of threats, from the illegal ivory trade to deforestation, which has forced the elephants to expand into human-inhabited areas and has increased conflict with people. Farmers worldwide -- including in India, Thailand, and Africa -- have frequently reported negative interactions with elephants grazing on crops or entering villages.

DeepDream: How Alexander Mordvintsev Excavated the Computer's Hidden Layers

#artificialintelligence

Early in the morning on May 18, 2015, Alexander Mordvintsev made an amazing discovery. He had been having trouble sleeping. Just after midnight, he awoke with a start. He was sure he'd heard a noise in the Zurich apartment where he lived with his wife and child. Afraid that he hadn't locked the door to the terrace, he ran out of the bedroom to check if there was an intruder. All was fine; the terrace door was locked, and there was no intruder.

There are three major smart home platforms on the market, and your smart home will probably have at least one of them installed: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit.

Have a great idea for 5G? Verizon may give you a million dollars to make it happen

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Think you've come up with a killer idea for exploiting the emerging next-generation wireless networks known as 5G? If Verizon buys into in your vision and considers it commercially viable, the company will issue you up to a cool $1 million in seed money. What's more, you'll be invited to develop the concept on live networks in one of Verizon's 5G incubator labs, in New York City; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Los Angeles; Palo Alto, California, and Washington, D.C. And Verizon will provide training and technical support to the chosen innovators. It's all part of a "Built on 5G Challenge" launched this week at CES in Las Vegas during a keynote address by Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg.

Why Dating for Facebook's Event-Based "Unlock" Feature Is Actually a Great Idea

Slate

Lonely hearts out there, rejoice--soon Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, and The League won't be your only options for frittering awaytime in your search for love. At its annual developer conference on Tuesday, Facebook revealed that the social media giant is entering the already crowded field of dating apps. "This is going to be for building real, long-term relationships -- not just for hookups," CEO Mark Zuckerberg joked, seemingly side-eyeing everyone's favorite time-suck, Tinder. While "Dating for Facebook" will be opt-in only, the rollout of a plan for a dating app amid the company's huge privacy scandal managed to raise some eyebrows. In an apparent effort to ward off criticism, Zuckerberg immediately addressed concerns that might arise around melding the app you use to see photos of your third cousin's new baby with your dating profile.
